A deposit return scheme (DRS) for all beverage containers (mixed material pouches, cartons, HDPE (the plastic that most bottles milk comes in) and cups are excluded) is being developed for implementation in August 2023. A DRS involves consumers paying a small amount of money (the deposit) for the beverage containers (single-use PET plastic , metal or glass containers) when they purchase a drink for consumption off-site. This deposit is refunded in full when consumers return the empty container.
