Countdown to Kilwinning By-Election

Posted on 24 Apr 2024

Voters will go to the polls on Thursday, May 9, 2024, for the Ward 6 Kilwinning by-election.

The by-election follows the recent passing of Councillor John Glover.

The candidates standing in the by-election are:

  • Ian Charles Gibson - Scottish Family Party - Putting Families First
  • Sheila Gibson - Scottish National Party (SNP)
  • Mary Hume - Scottish Labour Party
  • Ruby Kirkwood - Scottish Liberal Democrats
  • Chris Lawler - Scottish Conservative and Unionist

For those voting in person on the day, there will be six polling places, open from 7am to 10pm:

  • Cranberry Moss Community Centre
  • Dirrans Centre
  • Mansefield Trinity Church
  • Nethermains Community Centre
  • William Love Memorial Hall
  • Woodwynd Hall

Postal votes will be sent out on Friday, April 26.  Voters returning a postal vote must ensure that the Postal Vote Statement accompanying their vote is filled out correctly, paying particular attention to the inclusion of their correct date of birth. A signature identical to the one provided in their application must also be provided, although this is not required by postal voters who have a waiver.

Voters are reminded that the Kilwinning by-election will use the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system where voters mark their preference in numerical order, rather than by means of an X.

Returning Officer Craig Hatton explained: “Voters can vote for any number of candidates they wish in order - 1 next to their first choice, a 2 next to their second choice, a 3 next to their third choice and so on.

“If any candidate does not receive enough support to win a seat, then the count will proceed with that candidate's votes transferred to other candidates according to voters' next preferences until one is declared the winner.”

The count, which is carried out electronically for local elections, will be held the following day, Friday, May 10, with the result expected to be announced the same day. Further details on the by-election can be found on the Council website.
