Ayrshire beaches get set to welcome visitors to Safer Shores 2024

Keep it cool this summer and enjoy our beaches responsibly.
That's the key message from Councils, emergency services, NHS, and other partners at the launch of the Safer Shores 2024 campaign.
Safer Shores is a collaboration involving Ayrshire Civil Contingencies Team, British Red Cross, British Transport Police, Coastwatch, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, NHS Ayrshire & Arran, East, North and South Ayrshire Councils, Police Scotland, ScotRail, Scottish Ambulance Service, Scottish Fire and Rescue, and Stagecoach.
The aim is to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all who visit Ayrshire's coast during the beach season. Partners are committed to facilitating safe travel, enhancing visitor experiences, and preserving Ayrshire's reputation as a premier destination while minimising disruptions to local communities.
The plan outlines proactive measures to maximise public safety, curb disorder, and instil confidence, ensuring everyone can enjoy Ayrshire's safer shores throughout the summer.
Measures include alcohol restrictions on trains to and from the coast, bolstered patrols by Police Scotland and British Transport Police, heightened community safety and environmental patrols, and stringent enforcement of public alcohol bans, including beaches.
Chief Inspector Kevin Lammie said: “Ayrshire’s beaches are popular destinations for tourists and local residents, particularly in spells of good weather.
“People should be able to do enjoy their day safely and a comprehensive policing plan, alongside our partners, is in place to ensure that is the case.
“We would encourage people to enjoy themselves responsibly with consideration for others. Any criminal or anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated, and we will carry out enforcement action where required.
“By working collaboratively with our partners on the Safer Shores initiative, we aim to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable day on the beach.
“Anyone with concerns can contact police on 101.”
Councillor Martin Dowey, Leader of South Ayrshire Council, said: "We're thrilled to welcome visitors to our beaches and if we get the great weather, we're all hoping for, it'll be a bustling season. Working alongside our partners, we're dedicated to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all beachgoers, and we urge everyone to dispose of litter responsibly."
Yvonne Baulk, Head of Service for Housing and Public Protection at North Ayrshire Council, said: “We’re delighted to once again be working closely with our partners for the Safer Shores campaign and building on the successes of previous years. We want everyone to enjoy our beautiful beaches and coastline and to enjoy themselves without having to face antisocial behaviour.”
Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council added his support for the campaign. He said: “Residents of East Ayrshire are very fortunate to have a choice of local beaches within easy reach, making them the ideal destination for a short day visit over the summer months. We are happy to support our partners and neighbouring councils to make these outings as safe and enjoyable as possible.”
