Residents are encouraged to say YES to adult learning this Adult Learners' Week

Posted on 17 May 2024

Say YES to adult learning. That’s the message from North Ayrshire Council ahead of Adult Learners’ Week 2024.

Running from Saturday 18 May until 24 May, the national campaign - delivered by Scotland’s Learning Partnership - celebrates the benefits and many avenues of adult learning happening throughout Scotland.

Here in North Ayrshire, the Council is keen to champion the positive role that learning can play at any point in life.

To give residents a flavour of the variety and scale of learning in the area, the Community Learning and Development (CLD) team will be taking to social media to share a range of opportunities that will:

  • Shine the spotlight on the common interests of learners and providers;
  • Promote the benefits of non-formal adult learning;
  • Highlight the great opportunities CLD can offer communities and individuals who are new to adult learning;
  • Signpost followers to local opportunities designed to enhance employability and digital skills;
  • Help residents to come together, meet new people, feel more confident and be empowered to lead happier and more fulfilling lives.

It is hoped that by highlighting the activities available to adult learners, even more people will get involved and seek to acquire new skills so that they too can gain qualifications and potentially a new job to improve their lives.

Councillor Alan Hill, Cabinet Member for Islands and Communities said: “As the Cost-of-Living crisis continues to impact communities, it is only right that we do our very best to continue to provide support to our residents to help them unlock their potential during the challenging economic climate.

“This week, we will be using our social media channels to raise awareness of what exactly is out there for adults looking to learn a new skill, work towards a qualification or brush up on their own digital, numeracy or literacy skills.”

By supporting Adult Learners’ to take the next step in their learning journey, it is hoped that local people will not only gain confidence, it will also allow them to meet others in their communities and help them to achieve both personal and employability goals.

Councillor Hill adds: “There are so many brilliant chances to learn something new, and the team are on hand ready to support you. Everyone who is willing to learn is welcome to take the next step in their adult learning journey with us.

“Better yet, not only is adult learning fun, it also offers a great chance to meet likeminded people and form new connections and friendships in our communities.”
