Food businesses subject to approval
Food Hygiene law requires certain food businesses who handle unprocessed products of animal origin to be approved by the Local Authority in which they are based.
If you operate premises within North Ayrshire which manufacture or handle any of the following products you should contact us to find out if your business requires to be approved:
- Shellfish harvesting guidance document
- fishery products
- minced meat or meat preparations
- meat products
- dairy products
- eggs
Some premises will be exempt from the requirements.
Approval required
If your business requires to be approved, we will:
- send you an application form
- discuss with you requirements and documentation to accompany your application
Environmental Health will consider completed applications and will contact you to:
- seek clarification, if required
- arrange to inspect your premises and verify your Food Safety Management System
Once your business is approved, or conditionally approved, you will be issued with a unique identification number. All approved products must be labelled before being placed on the market for sale.
Food Standards Scotland maintains a list of approved premises in Scotland.
