Ship inspections
Environmental Health inspects ships which arrive at Hunterston and Fairlie to:
- ensure the sanitary condition of vessels
- control the risk, and spread, of infectious disease
The Ship Sanitation Certificate
The requirement for a ship sanitation certificate has been implemented in Scotland by The Public Health (Ships) (Scotland) Regulations 1971, as amended, and includes the checking of:
- water supply
- food safety
- pest control
- waste disposal
- crew accommodation
Please contact Environmental Health who will arrange to send out a Ship Sanitation Certificate Inquiry Form for completion and return prior to inspection of the vessel.
Fees and charges
North Ayrshire Council, in line with other local and port health authorities within the UK, apply the recommended scale of charges as agreed by Association of Port Health Authorities. These came into force on 1 April 2024.

With the exception of:
- vessels with the capacity to carry between 50 and 1000 persons – £520 charge
- vessels with the capacity to carry more than 1000 persons – £890 charge
Extra charges, based on actual costs, may be added for exceptional costs such as:
- launch hire
- out-of-hours duty
- travel
- extended or re-inspections of ships subject to control measures.
