Pay Council Tax

Council Tax runs from 1 April each year to 31 March the following year. Instalments are payable over 10 or 12 months from April.

Our payment date is on, or before, the 15th of each month.

Residents can make weekly payments. Provided you pay the full monthly amount by the due date on your Council Tax bill.

If you pay by Direct Debit you can choose from three payment dates:

  • 1st
  • 15th
  • 28th

How to pay

There are various methods you can use to pay your Council Tax.

Problems paying your Council Tax

Call us for confidential advice and support if worried about:

  • having difficulties making Council Tax payments
  • being in arrears with Council Tax payments

We can discuss a repayment plan to help you clear any previous year’s debts, whilst keeping current payments up to date.

We can put you in touch with the Money Matters team for independent and confidential advice.

If you’re on a low income, we can refer you to our Benefits Service to ensure you’re receiving all the help you can get.

Get a copy of your bill

There are two forms of Council Tax bill. The type you get will depend on how you you receive your normal bills.

Electronic bill (e-bill)

If you receive a Council Tax e-bill, you can view your bills and print them from your online account.

Paper bill

If you receive a paper Council Tax bill, you can request a paper copy of your most recent bill:

This will include any payments made to your account since your bill was issued.

Responsibility of payment

Residents of a property are generally liable to pay Council Tax. This is for both private-owned and rented properties. Empty properties are the responsibility of the non-resident owners or tenants.

The following residents are jointly liable to pay Council Tax:

  • married residents or those living with a partner
  • residents who are joint owners or tenants

If a student is living with a non-student partner, they are not jointly liable for Council Tax charges.

Change of circumstances

Contact us immediately if there is a change in your circumstances. A change in circumstances is anything that may affect your Council Tax liability. This includes a change in who owns your property. You must let us know to update your account.

We have the power to impose a penalty of up to £500. We can do this if you fail to provide information that affects your Council Tax liability.

Appeals

You can appeal if you think that you are not liable to pay Council Tax. You can appeal if there was a mistake in calculating your bill.

Notify us within 28 days of receiving your bill.

Fair Processing Notice

The Council is under a duty to protect the public funds it administers. Thus, we may use the information you have provided for the prevention and detection of fraud.

We may also share this information with other bodies responsible for auditing or administering public funds for these purposes.
