Mill Burn Flood Protection Scheme

Following the findings of the National Flood Risk Assessment, the development and implementation of the Mill Burn, Millport Flood Protection Scheme has been included as an action in both the first and second Ayrshire Local Flood Risk Management Plan.

The design of the scheme, comprising of a 494 metre long overflow between the Golf Road/Kirkton Crescent junction and West Bay is well advanced. See scheme notification drawings

When complete the scheme will provide a one in 200 year standard of flood protection to 124 island properties. For more information, see the environmental screening document.

Latest updates

  • on 15 June 2021, North Ayrshire Cabinet confirmed scheme without modifications, agreed the project timescale and approved the final design
  • on 16 August 2021, the Mill Burn, Millport, Flood Protection Scheme became operative
  • once the scheme became operative, the detailed design of scheme started
  • construction is due to start in 2025
