Festive period bin collection information
Residents are being reminded to check bin collection dates over the festive period as there will be some changes.
People living across North Ayrshire should note the changes.
These are:
On the mainland and Cumbrae
Bins due for collection on Wednesday 25 December will be collected four days earlier on Saturday 21 December.
Bins due for collection on Thursday 26 December will be collected four days earlier on Sunday 22 December.
Bins due for collection on Wednesday 1 January will be collected four days earlier on Saturday 28 December and
Bins due for collection on Thursday 2 January will be collected four days earlier on Sunday 29 December.
The actual time of collection may vary during the festive period, and residents are asked to put bins out for 7am. If adverse weather affects your area, the team will return to collect your bin when possible.
If your normal collection day does not fall on these days, it will not be affected and will remain the same.
On Arran the changes are:
Bins due for collection on Wednesday 25 December will be collected two days later on Friday 27 December. There are no other changes.
Bins due for collection on Wednesday 1 January will be collected two days later on Friday 3 January. There are no other changes.
Arran residents can phone the council’s Local Office on 01770 600338 for any further information.
Again, the advice is to put your bin out for 7am as the actual time of collection might vary during the holidays. And if adverse weather affects your area the council will return to collect your bin when possible.
Please note that the last collection of bulky collections (special uplifts) for residents in 2024 will be 20 December. This service will recommence on 20 January 2025.
The last collection of brown bins for mainland and Cumbrae residents in 2024 will be 20 December. This service will recommence on 6 January 2025.
Quote: Many of us end up with more cardboard and paper than usual around Christmas. And we can all play our part by recycling responsibly and putting the right stuff in the right bins, and also by using gift wrapping that can be recycled. Remember, the easy test for wrapping paper is that if you scrunch it up and it stays scrunched – and has no glitter or foil – then you can recycle it. Also, remember that bin collection dates and times in your neighbourhood might be different at this time of year, so please take note of any changes.

Cabinet Member for Green Environment and Economy
In all areas, the council’s Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) will close at 2pm (last entry is 1.30pm) on 24 December and remain closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The centres will close at 2pm (again, last entry is 1.30pm) on 31 December and remain Closed on 1 and 2 January – and will be open as usual every other day.
Recognising that there will be an increase in demand after Christmas, the HWRCs at Bartonholm, Kilbirnie and Largs will be open for an extra two hours on Friday 27 December 2024 and Saturday 28 December 2024.
The normal working hours are 10am to 4.30pm and these will be extended to 9am to 5.30pm on 27 and 28 December.
On the mainland and Cumbrae, real Christmas trees (in 5ft or less sections) can be left beside brown your bin from 13 January 2025 over the following two-week collection cycle. On Arran, real Christmas trees (in 5ft or less sections) can be deposited at the Brodick HWRC.
Please visit the Council Bin Collection Days page for information during the festive period and follow our social media channels for updates.
Businesses who receive commercial waste collections should visit the Council’s website for further information.
